Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 840C - Living color, at a price you can live with (My boss made up the title - I have to admit, it's catchy -Eli)
A Product Review by Eli Black

Everybody needs a printer. If you’re in the market for a new one, the Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 840C may be just the ticket.

The 840C has a dual-interface system that works with either a parallel printer port, or a USB port if your computer supports it. This makes it quite flexible as it works with both older and newer Windows machines, as well as with newer Macintoshes (MacOS 8.1+).

The 840C is capable of printing at 8ppm (pages per minute) in black, and 5ppm in color. If quality is set higher than normal, color prints can take up to a couple minutes. Its quality is exceptional at normal settings on plain paper, and amazing when photo paper and higher settings - up to 600x1200 dpi (dots per inch) - are used. For an example of this, visit the Menu Bar and check out some of the samples on the fridge. They’re all original 3D art by me, printed off a DeskJet 840C with photo paper (available in our retail area).

Another advantage of the DeskJet 840C is that it uses two separate printer cartridges - one color and one black - and you don’t have to replace them both just because one is empty. This avoids the waste built into some printers, in which you may have to toss good color because you’re out of black ink.

In summary, this printer is compatible with almost anything thanks to its USB or parallel interface, easy to use, and exceptional in output. I used to think it would require a color laser printer for this kind of quality, but it would appear that inkjet technology has grown quite a bit. When I printed my test images, the only real flaws I noticed in them were small blurs and jiggles that were caused by the program I was using on the computer. The fact that the 840C printed the flaws means that it did an outstand-ing job at reproducing exactly what was on the screen, be it good or bad. This printer can’t make your work better, but it can certainly bring it accurately into the real world.
